Lights Out at 10 PM? Yep, That’s Swiss Law!

Beware of using lights after 10 PM in Switzerland

Law: In Switzerland, using lights after 10 PM in apartments is often prohibited. The law stems from a desire to keep the area quiet and prevent disturbing neighbours at night. This is especially common in apartment buildings where the lights can disturb other residents. Forget to turn off your lights after 10 PM, and you might get a visit from your neighbour with a polite but firm complaint!

Sympathy and Empathy

The difference between sympathy and empathy is not just in word but in the feeling.

We often say ‘I am sorry for your loss’ or ‘condolences’. But how many of us have understood the feeling or emotion of going through such loss?

That is precisely the difference between sympathy and empathy – phrases most interchangeably used, yet having distinct meanings.

Sympathy involves feeling pity for a person and is always a superficial feeling as one may not fully understand the person. Empathy involves acknowledging and supporting a person emotionally. It fosters a deeper connect between people.

We show sympathy to the person for going through a particular situation or an end result or consequence. When we understand the emotion, feeling or impact of an event on a person, then it means we are empathetic

So, the next time our friend or colleague does not get desired grades, or promotion at work or is facing a break-up, separation or loss of loved one or pet, let us lend a patient ear or a shoulder for them to vent their feelings and understand their intense emotion rather than just saying you are sorry and moving on. After all, someday we may need empathy coming our way. Worth a thought?
