Know the law before ‘attempting’ suicide.

Suicide is a big NO!

The erstwhile Indian Penal Code (IPC) now rechristened ‘Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita’ Act (‘BNS’) deals with provisions relating to suicide.

Strangely, it is the attempt to commit suicide (and not suicide itself) that is criminalized. Attempting suicide will attract fine or imprisonment or both.

This is a dichotomous provision. It implies that if a person survives a suicide attempt, then he/ she would be fine or imprisoned or both! Choice between devil and the deep sea.

There have been numerous instances of attempted suicide survivors who have had go through the grind of case being registered, summoned to police stations and being harassed on that rather than being counselled. This only leads to mental agony, the very reason why suicides take place.

Worth a Thought?

Women have each other’s’ backs through sisterhood.

In this together.
Women deal with several stereotypes: bad car drivers, unpredictably emotional, eating a lot for being a ‘woman’, solely responsible for children’s progress .…the list seems endless. But the ‘mother’ of all stereotypes – women cannot be friends with other women!

Nurturing relationships comes naturally to women. Being empathetic, inclusive and multi-tasking, women are natural team players. Tending to the sick, an act of kindness, a helpful deed, lending a shoulder to lean on, giving a patient ear, assisting in meeting deadlines, or silently going all out to motivate someone when down…strangely this list seems endless as well. A few women suffering from the ‘pull her down’ syndrome cannot be the reason to stereotype entire womankind.

‘Sisterhood’ is the concept of friends becoming sisters. A soft but powerful tool that helps women cope with themselves and their professional/ personal aspirations. Women come together to support, inspire and motivate and uplift each other sans judgment or malice. This generates a sense of solidarity, a feeling of not being alone in the world. The feeling of having ‘each other’s back’ helps in undertaking any chore, duty or assignment without hesitation. It will eventually result in raising confident next generation of women.

This Women’s Day and thereafter it is time break stereotypes and celebrate sisters from other mothers. Worth a thought?
